What is a Social History Evaluation?

A social history evaluation includes an interview with an adult client or a parent or caregiver of a child.  The social history provides an assessment of biopsychosocial factors  such as social, emotional, physical, behavioral, and cultural (e.g., birth, development, traumas, family relations, culture, ethnicity, religion, etc.) that may impact a person's adjustment to and performance in life, school, and community.

Social histories are usually performed as part of a school district's child study team, but are also performed as part of an adult psychological or psychoeducational evaluation. This helps understand a person's biopsychosocial factors that can help explain thoughts, feelings, behaviors, etc.
